On January 20th, 2017, Donald Trump was sworn into office as the 45th president of the United States. Many people have well-founded concerns about President Trump’s immigration goals and policy ideas. Throughout his campaign, Trump made several offensive comments about immigrant groups and he consistently promised to take harsh measures to restrict the rights of immigrants. As Trump takes office, it is more important than ever that people in our community stand up for the rights and interests of our immigrant neighbors. The following is a list of three things you can do right now to help support immigrant rights in Los Angeles.
Join a March or a Protest
As Voice of America (VOA News) recently reported, several thousand protesters took to the streets of L.A. to protest President Trump’s expected crackdown on immigration. The protest included activists, labor organizers, elected representatives and ordinary members of the community. The goal of the event was to send the explicit message that immigrant rights are important and that immigrants are welcome in Los Angeles. Other pro-immigration marches and protests will continue to take place in the future. When possible, it is important to join such events, as the larger a protest is, the more likely it is to receive media attention and to encourage positive change.
Call Your Elected Representatives
There is no doubt that President Trump has tremendous power. However, the American system is based on the principle of checks and balances. In many ways, the president will not be able to take action without approval or support from the United States congress, state government, local and municipal governments and, in some cases, the courts. As such, it is critical that people reach out to their representatives to let them know how important it is to stop Trump’s immigration agenda. Our elected representatives need to know how much we care about this issue. For information on who to contact and how to contact them, CivilRights.org has provided some very helpful tips. One thing that bears highlighting: A phone call is better than a letter, email or social media post.
Support Charities and Political Causes
Finally, you can stand up for immigrants by supporting local charities and political causes. Pro-immigrant groups and organizations are always in desperate need of support. You can make a valuable contribution using your time, your money or, in some cases, other goods and supplies that you no long need. Donating to a good cause is one of the best ways to make a difference in the life of someone who needs help.
