As quoted in Biden’s immigration plan, the Trump Administration has “waged an unrelenting assault on our values and our history as a nation of immigrants.” In his first 100 days in office, President-Elect Biden promises to focus on undoing the damage that the Trump Administration has done to our immigration system. As much of the Trump immigration agenda was carried out through executive action, President-Elect Biden will have significant authority to make immediate changes.
Modernize the Immigration System—Reduce Backlogs
The problems with America’s immigration system pre-date Donald Trump’s emergence onto the political scene. For many years, there have been growing delays and backlogs. President-Elect Biden has made a pledge to address these long-standing issues. Among other things, he wants to give additional dedicated funding to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and take steps to bring undocumented immigrants out of the shadows.
Protect Dreamers and their Families
President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris have both shared public support for DREAMers. The Biden immigration agenda lays out a strategy to protect DREAMers and their family members. He is pledging to take action to codify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) into law. Additionally, support is expressed for a renewed push to enact Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) or another similar program.
Reassert the American Commitment to Assist Refugees
In just four years, the Trump Administration did enormous damage to our asylum policy. The number of refugees accepted into the United States decreased every year that Donald Trump was in office—we take in 80 percent fewer refugees than we did during the Obama Administration. As president, Joe Biden says he will work to reverse the damage and reassert America’s global commitment as a leader in welcoming asylum seekers and assisting refugees. It is a moral obligation and it is imperative that the incoming Biden Administration is held accountable on this and other issues.
