According to a report from CBS News, Urooj Alavi, a nurse who works in an intensive care unit (ICU) in Southern California, is currently fighting on the frontlines of America’s battle with COVID-19. A mother of a six-year-old and a one-year-old, she is working tirelessly to help save lives.
At the same time, her family is dealing with the additional stress and trauma of an ongoing deportation case. Even though they share two young children and there are no allegations of criminal conduct, her husband is currently facing deportation from the United States.
Husband Has No Criminal Record, Lived in U.S. for More than 15 Years
Urooj Alavi is a United States citizen and a resident of Anaheim, California. A nurse in ICU, she has put in demanding shifting in the hospital over the last six months. As the Trump Administration fails to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus, she and other nurses will undoubtedly be required to put in many more hours in the coming months.
Her husband, Amir Ali, is currently facing deportation from the United States. A native of Pakistan and father of two young children, Mr. Ali has lived in California for nearly two decades. Despite the fact that he has no criminal record and the pandemic is raging on, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is actively trying to remove him from the country. Mr. Ali is currently being detained in an ICE detention facility in Arizona.
ACLU Files a Stay of Removal to Keep the Family Together
CBS News reports that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has filed a ‘Stay of Removal’ in an effort to keep this vulnerable family together. A Stay of Removal is an emergency order that, at least temporarily, prohibits the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from removing an immigrant from the country.
COVID-19 Pandemic Has Had a Disproportionate Impact on Immigrants
This case is an especially stark example that demonstrates the severe impact that COVID-19 (and our federal government’s policies) are having on immigrant families. Sadly, a Southern California family is at risk of being torn apart even as a mother is on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic.
Many other immigrant families are also being hit hard by the COVID-19 outbreak. In August, the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) released a report highlighting the disproportionate impact that COVID-19 is having on non-citizens. Far more needs to be done to support immigrants and their families.
