As reported by KTLA 5, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Chief Michel Moore released a joint public statement pledging support to everyone in Los Angeles — regardless of their immigration status. The announcement came after renewed fears that ICE deportation raids were about to start in Los Angeles and several other major cities around the country.
Mayor Garcetti and Chief Moore both emphasized the fact that Los Angeles police officers and the city’s public officials would not be cooperating with or assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in any capacity. Los Angeles formally declared itself to be a sanctuary city earlier this year.
The Extent of the Impending Immigration Raids is Still Unknown
In recent weeks, there has been widespread confusion and panic surrounding the possibility of imminent, large-scale immigration raids. The raids have been touted by President Trump and other Trump Administration officials. Tragically, CBS Los Angeles has reported that many people are “afraid to go outside.” One shop owner at a market with largely immigrant clientele stated that sales were down dramatically over the last month.
By some reports, immigration raids were scheduled to begin on Sunday, July 14th. However, it does not appear that much actually occurred — at least not yet. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, there were only small raids on Sunday, and nothing that was especially of the ordinary. CNN also reports that major ICE raids did not materialize on Sunday. ABC 7 cited immigration advocates stating that there were no major ICE operations carried out in Southern California. That being said, although raids have not yet occurred, the fear is very real and everyone needs to be cautious.
